Attempt to define Panama in a single word, and you might be tempted to go for a cliché like paradise or heaven. Luckily, there’s far more depth to this Central American gem. Marvel at the pastel tones of historic buildings in Panama City’s Casco Antiguo, feel the beat during jam sessions with local musicians and feast on traditional fare during this 10-day tour.

Day 1 Casco Antiguo
Transfer to your hotel in Casco Antiguo. The city was built by Spaniards in the 1673 as the second settlement established by the Europeans on the Pacific Coast of America. It was certified by UNESCO in 1997 as a historical heritage site and 70 per cent has been restored to its original grandeur.

Day 2 Casco Antiguo
Explore the old quarter and learn about the country’s exciting history. Get together with locals and enjoy a taste of the local cuisine. After lunch, you will be transferred to the village of Portobelo located in Colón Province on the Caribbean Coast.

Day 3 Portobelo
Venture to the village to check out the fortresses (Santiago de la Gloria y San Jeromino) and San Felipe Church, where you’ll see the Black Christ. Mingle with the locals and learn about some of the local Congo culture. In the afternoon visit an art gallery with a Congo craftsperson. Learn how to create masks, hats and other outfits used during traditional dances.

Day 4 Portobelo
Mingle with a group of young musicians who are part of the ONG Bahia de Portobelo, an organisation created with the intention of keeping the culture alive. Learn about their music, rhythms and folklore. In the afternoon, transfer to a white sandy beach.

Day 5 Portobelo
Go fishing and learning about the different species that can be caught in the Caribbean Sea. Afterwards, make your way to a farm to harvest some cassava or potatoes that will be cooked with the fish you caught and some patacones (green plantain) for lunch.

Day 6 The Congo Festival
The Congo Festival is one of the most colourful celebrations in the region and has been promoted by locals who focus on retaining their culture, which dates back to the 1500s.

Day 7 Chiriqui Highlands
In the morning, you’ll have some time to yourself to enjoy more of the Congo Festival. At midday, depart from Portobelo to the airport in Panama City, where you’ll fly to David City in the Chiriquí Province. Transfer to the village of Cerro Punta.

Day 8 Cerro Punta
Today, you’ll be observe Panama’s coffee industry, taking part in the harvesting and roasting of coffee beans. You’ll also have the opportunity to spend some time with the Ngobe community, one of the oldest native communities in Panama. In an effort to recognise this fragile community, the government created an indigenous reservation in the area to to ensure its continued existence.

Day 9 Panama City
Spend the morning either resting or exploring Cerro Punta. At midday, you’ll transfer back to the airport for a flight to Panama City. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel. This evening, enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 10 Depart
Following breakfast, you will be transferred to Tocumen Airport for your onward flight.
