Even the name sounds remote. This eight-day trip to Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will take you deep into the north of Russia, where you’ll eat, sleep and live like the local Nenet people, who herd reindeer in this otherworldly landscape.

Day 1 Salekhard
Transfer to your hotel from Salekhard Airport. The remainder of the day is at your leisure.

Day 2 Salekhard
From Salekhard, you’ll travel to a nomad camp in the Ural Federal District, where you’ll meet with the reindeer herders of the Langot-Yugan River and the mountain range of the Polar Urals. Tonight, get ready to lay down your weary head in a chum (reindeer-hide tent).
Overnight: Chum (reindeer hide-tent).
Day 3 Ural Federal District
Enjoy sightseeing around the camp, and acquaint yourself with the herders and their children. Learn about their dwellings, transportation (sledges), pet deer (avks) and huskies. Familiarise yourself with equipment, such as the tynzyan, which is used for catching deer, and learn how to make it. Witness the arrival of a herd of up to a thousand deer, taste local cuisine and learn how to cook traditional dishes.
Overnight: Chum
Day 6 Salekhard
Transfer to Laborovaya of the Ural Federal District. This evening you will arrive back in Salekhard.

Day 7 Salekhard
Depart for a sightseeing tour around the city. Visit Obdorskiy Ostrog, a historical and cultural complex, which has been built to mirror an ancient fortress. Enjoy free time at lunch before transferring to Gornoknyazevsk by bus where you’ll explore the natural and ethnographic complex of Gornoknyazevsk settlement. Spend the night in Salekhard.

Day 8 Depart
Today you will be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
